George Street and First New Town is the flagship of Edinburgh’s ambitious City Centre Transformation Plans. This £30million public realm and transport improvement is co funded by Sustrans.
streets-UK has worked as sub consultants in a multi-disciplinary team at various stages on the George Street project since 2016. Our role has been to create and oversee the engagement strategy for the project and facilitate various elements of consultation and communications at key milestones.
There are many stakeholders with differing views and facilitating a shared vision has been challenging at times, as has communicating progress when there is a perception that the project has been ongoing for a number of years.
Most recently we worked with the Council’s in-house communications team and the Design Team to launch the final concept designs. Due to covid restrictions, all activity was managed online using the project website and creating a CGI animation of the future street. We have also planned and facilitated online workshops and public events and aimed to avoid any risk of digital exclusion by widely distributing printed materials.
The final concept designs have been well received with over two thirds of the public confirming they would be more likely to visit the street once works are complete.
